The 80's unearthed....

So as I'm going through my stuff today deciding what to keep, sell, get rid of etc. I ran across my badge collection from the 80's. I know I had WAY more than this, but somehow these are the only ones that seemed to make it all these years...



I remember wearing these on this really cool white coat that I had...then on my men's blazers. And now all that same fashion is back again.

Yeah, that's my brother....

So my brother was cast in the current production of "Ragtime" the musical on Broadway and I couldn't be more excited. He's playing Tateh. Here's a picture from broadway.com:

My rockin' friend...

I ran into my friend Ryan today and we chatted about our recent experiences at ACL. Seeing him again prompted me to post this video from his band Crash Gallery. I think they are really great. Ryan is the vocalist. It reminds me of a lot of the music that I've been listening to over at last.fm lately.



By the way, if you like what you hear they are playing with Lions at The Mohawk next Friday October 16th on the outside stage. I think I'll be there...

Booth set up

After all of that crazy work last week to get my new booth displays made I thought I might share some pictures with you.

Here's the whole thing set up in my living room as I was working on it.



I really didn't have to change anything when I got outside. I was a bit worried that some of the displays might be a bit light and would blow over in the wind, but with a little clear packing tape strategically placed, I didn't have any problems at all.



I made the table cloth myself out of some white vinyl. It worked out perfectly and I think gives the whole table a clean & professional look. All the other displays I made myself and just gave them an updated look with some white lacquer.

I think the effort was well worth it. I really enjoyed challenging myself, yet again, to keep updating and making Tasty Jewelry bigger and better than ever.

ACL festival day 3

Today it was supposed to rain...and it didn't. Yay! (I wonder how much weathermen get paid, because I'd like a piece of that action.) And even though it didn't rain today, the effects of yesterday's continuous onslaught were felt by EVERYONE by way of 5" deep mud...everywhere! It was so slippery I'm surprised that more people didn't fall.



Here are my shoes after being there for 15 minutes.



I started off seeing the B-52s today. Classic, retro and just plain fun. They sounded great, looked great and had a huge crowd too.



I was really looking forward to my next band White Lies who are from London. I recently became aware of this band through my friend Tim. (who incidentally has brilliant taste in music) I was so excited that they were playing ACL and they blew me away! Definitely one of my favorite new bands of 2009.



...and later I got a chance to meet them and chat a bit about their tour with Kings of Leon. They are definitely a band to watch out for...plus they are really sweet.



Arctic Monkeys were next and I hate to say it, but were kinda blah. Just sort of got up there and played...not a lot of energy or excitement. The crowd up front seemed to get into it, but you have to figure they are the real die hard fans, so I'm glad at least they liked it. Now, don't get me wrong, I really like this band normally, I was just a bit disappointed in their live act.



So next was Passion Pit, but I was in need of some major change of clothes so I decided to dash home, take a quick shower and then return...so I missed them. I did get to hear them play as I was walking back which was very cool.

Next up was Girl Talk. Now I've never heard of this band & didn't know anything about what I was about to witness. But as I moved towards the area of the stage realized that a TON of other people must have known, so I figured I was in for a treat.

First off, Girl Talk is a one man DJ operation, with just a table on stage featuring his equipment. But don't let that fool you. As he took the stage the audience in the front erupted, and as the music started so did the thumping, dancing and jumping up & down. I had never really seen anything like it ever. He was mixing hip hop, with 80's tunes, R & B with pop music. It was insane. I don't think I am exaggerating when I say that there were at least 40,000 people in attendance of that show.

Now this was after he allowed like 50 kids on stage to dance with him the entire time. It looked like so much fun!!!

I decided to head over to see where I could post up for Pearl Jam who were this year's headliners. By the time I got over to that side of the park it was mostly full. Now I could have walked myself through the thick mud & muck in the dark to get closer, but I decided that after 3 days of music, I was happy where I was. Unfortunately once they started the sound was not good. I figured that I could hear it better from outside the park, so after about 4 - 5 songs I decided to make my trek home. They sounded great and how cool that they were back on the road and made time for little 'ole Austin. ;)

All in all, this was such a fantastic ACL festival for me. I got a chance to really just meander and see what I wanted. I ran into several friends there so I had a chance to hang out with them too...I am tired, to say the least, but really inspired by all of the kindness of the people at this festival. It was nice to be a part of something so huge that happens here in Austin.



I would be crazy not to say thank you to my sister, Annie, for being so generous on my birthday this year and getting me my ticket. So big hugs & a HUGE thanks for making this event happen for me.

ACL festival Day 2

Today was one of the rainiest days I've ever seen. Not a crazy thunderstorm, winds whipping, crazy sideways rain type of days...but just the longest, most continuous, not stopping until it soaks everything & everyone type of rain. Through all of this thousands of people still enjoyed hanging out and listening to live music. I've never seen anything like it...like everyone rallied together and just dealt with it.

I had planned on seeing a few more bands than I did today, but the ones I wanted to see were all spread out time-wise. Which would have had me at the park from about 1pm - 10pm...just a little too long seeing as I still have lots of bands I want to see tomorrow.

So I saw Citizen Cope & Ghostland Observatory. I've seen both bands a few times, so I pretty much knew what to expect. Great music, solid performances and with Ghostland I even got a kick ass laser light show. Cool!

The rains came down steady before, during and after the hour long set by Cope. He played mostly songs I already knew with a few new ones peppered in. Alice Smith even joined him at the end to help with vocals. Nice.

I didn't take my phone or camera today, so this stock photo will have to do...



Ghostland Observatory, well, how on earth do you describe their awesomeness? Just very unique, electronic, dance, rock goodness. They hit the stage and didn't stop rocking for 90 minutes. I danced the entire time. At one point they even brought on the University of Texas marching band...a la circuit 1979 Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk". The crowd went wild. The laser show was great, they kept throwing out glow sticks & glow jewelry so everyone in the front was loaded with neon bling. It looked really cool.

Tomorrow's line up for me: B-52's, White Lies, Arctic Monkeys, Passion Pit, The Dead Weather, (Girl Talk - maybe) & Pearl Jam. It's supposed to rain again all day tomorrow so I'm planning on fashioning a sassy outfit out of garbage bags. ;)

ACL festival day 1...part 2

After Phoenix I walked back home to grab a bite to eat and to change into some jeans. Luckily the weather this year is much cooler than in previous years, so I thought I would take advantage of it.

The next band I went to see was Them Crooked Vultures. Now most people probably haven't heard of them since they don't have an album out yet and have only played a few shows. This is a band comprised of Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss & others), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, & a little band called Nirvana) & John Paul Jones (uh, Led Zepplin ring a bell?)

So here are these three heavy hitters all doing what they do best and doing it well. The show started out gripping the crowd with tons of energy and never let go. I was pretty far back to start and since I'm somewhat vertically challenged was getting frustrated that I couldn't see much. This was such a unique & rare experience and well, since I'm the type of person that likes to seize the moment during times like these, I decided to work my way up a little closer. So smiling, and excusing myself politely got me pretty far...uh, actually all the way to the front! I really channeled my best friend Caroline (who couldn't be there with me) and feel like that was what made me go all the way up there.

I was so excited to be so close to such greatness. Dave Grohl was a blur of long dark hair and heavy hitting beats. Josh & John Paul were just rockin' it too. It seemed like such a surreal experience. I was about 20 feet from them! If I had a better camera my shots wouldn't have been so blurry...but I did get some pretty good ones. I just wanted to enjoy the show and not worry so much about grabbing a photo.

The last show that I saw were the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Karen O. is by far one of the most expressive people I've ever watched on stage. She personifies coolness & creativity. A true pioneer... She was clad in a wildly printed body suit with amazing fish net stockings & accessorized with this cool neon orange fringe necklace, belt & wristband ensemble. Sometimes with a cool cape, sometimes with her signature zippered leather jacket...that girl sure does know how to work a microphone too. Just a force of energy and you could tell how much she loved doing it. She mentioned how much she loved Austin which is cool too.

I was pretty far back so the best pics I could get were on the jumbo tron. Here she is singing "Maps" which was heart-wrenching and so soulful you could feel her pain.



So its raining all day today...just a gentle, soft soaking type of rain that will make the experience all that more exciting. :)

Today I'll see: Mute Math, Citizen Cope, Mos Def, STS9, & Ghostland Observatory. At least that's the plan...it will be interesting to see how people deal with the rain. I'm just planning on wearing a poncho and toughing it out. We'll see how that goes.

ACL festival Day 1...part 1

Wow! I don't know if I have the words to describe how great the first day of the 2009 ACL festival was for me. There were several bands that I wanted to see, however, with the way my day went and with the timing of things I ended up three amazing shows today. I cannot begin to write about them all on one post...so here's part 1, band 1.

Phoenix: I got there about an hour early so that I could get a good spot. I was going to see The Walkmen, but realized that if I wanted to procure a sweet spot for Phoenix, I would have to just listen to them instead. No problem.

I was about 20 yards from the stage which was the perfect spot not to have to see over too many heads. :) They were about 3 songs in when the singer Thomas Mars stated that this was the biggest crowd they'd ever played for. You could tell by the look on the band's faces that they were amazed at the energy being thrown at them during each song. On the jumbo screens to the sides of the stage they would flash up shots of the crowd...I didn't realize how many people were there until I saw it for myself. I felt very fortunate to be standing where I was! My estimate would have to be about 25,000 people, and that is probably on the conservative side. Here's a bit of video so you could see them in action. (There is no sound because I took it from my digital camera, so sorry about that)



It was such a rush of energy...the music was great, the crowd was great and it started my whole festival experience off on a wonderful note.

ACL festival 2009

It's been a few years since I've attended the ACL festival for the full 3 days and I'm so excited about it.

This is the first time I've attended it by myself, and I must say I'm pretty happy about that. I get to see who I want, when I want, without having to compromise my taste in music.

Tomorrow I am slated to see: The Walkmen, Phoenix, Them Crooked Vultures (and if you don't know who these guys are, step out from under your rock..think Foo Fighters meet Queens of the Stone Age meet Led Zepplin. omg) and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Kings of Leon are playing at the same time but I've already seen them and Karen O. is just the coolest, so I'd like to see her rock it out.

I'm actually the most excited about seeing Phoenix since I started listening to them I think they are très chouette.






There are tons of other shows going on tomorrow, but if I'm going to do this thing for 3 days I've got to pace myself. One of the greatest aspects that I might have left out is the fact that I live in the neighborhood of the festival. I mean like so close that I can hear the music if I open my windows. I get to actually walk there. I love that. It's quite awesome in the fact that the aggregate attendance from last year was 218,000 people. This event is nothing less than awesome.



So stay tuned...I will be taking photos and updating the blog as much as I can. In the past, it's been not so great, but I will do my best to update as much as I can.

my life in concerts - updated 12/4/09

Ever since my first concert in 1982 where I saw The Police play with Joan Jett as the opening act, I've tried to keep my ticket stubs to the shows I've seen. Now there are obviously some that are missing...either I was on a guest list or there was an electronic ticket issued. There have been quite a few times that I've even managed to hang out backstage with some of the artists.

I've met the Smashing Pumpkins, Elliott Smith, and INXS (amongst several others). Speaking of INXS, I have an old pair of ripped up jeans the the entire band signed including Michael Hutchence who signed them a few times also writing "Salubrious Salutations" and added a heart w/arrow on them. I still have those jeans...

Here are some detailed images of the wine charms that I'm making for the Austin Museum of Art's event in a few weeks. They wanted 35 sets of 6 wine charms which means I needed to make 210 individual charms total.


All the charms had to be printed, cut out, heat treated, then sealed.



The next step was to line all the edges in black so they would look nice.



Then each one (don't forget 210 of them) had to have a jump ring attached to it so it could hang on the ring that goes around the stem of the wine glass.



I attached them to one of my earring cards then that got slipped into a clear plastic tube that I cut to fit. I love coming up with fun packaging for items. These tubes are really versatile and useful. They can be reused for lots of things...I hope people recycle them.



So that's what I've been up to for the past few days. I can say that I am in dire need of a good arm & hand massage. I will be dropping these of next week and am looking forward to hearing what they have to say.

On another note...the website is pretty much ready to go. I'm just waiting now until the month is over so that I can honor the sale that I have going. I'm just saying that there are going to be lots of things no longer available, so you might want to go over and get the goodies you like while you still can. And at 40% off, I'm wondering if I'm just crazy or something. :)

la dolce vita....

Yesterday I was contacted by my friend Justin O'Connor from the Austin Museum of Art who was wondering if I might be interested in collaborating with them on some promotional merchandise. When I found out that it was for their upcoming 20th annual La Dolce Vita Food & Wine Festival out at Laguna Gloria I just couldn't say no.



So I am making them a special edition set of six wine charms. There are 20 different artists who have designed a pair of wine glasses that will be auctioned off as well. (More details about that auction are here.) All proceeds will benefit exhibition & education programs at the museum. And you know I'm all about that!



If you get a chance you should really try to attend this event. I hear its quite something. I'll be there eating and drinking my way around all the art that night so if you see me please say hi.

moving on...

I think anyone who knows me realizes that the past year has not been one of my best. I would have to agree, but that being said, I can add that even though it's been tough, its also been a great opportunity for me to learn & grow.

Recently losing my mother to a rare illness and then letting go of a relationship that wasn't meant to be are two incredibly difficult things for anyone to experience. Having both of them happen within 10 months of each other, well that's a different story altogether.

When you are in the middle of crisis you just don't see things clearly. It takes time and a lot of courage to find your way out. You just take it a day at a time until one day you just realize that its over, you've survived, and most importantly, you've learned something about yourself and your character.

Recently I had that day. A moment of clarity, an awareness of what I wanted and where I wanted to be. It really felt great. It really feels great.



So here's to all the wonderful people that helped me through the first part of this year...I'm looking forward to finishing it with a big smile on my face.

So this post isn't about how I went out on a bender last night with my friend Kristen & how much Maker's Mark we put back. (Although that might make for a very interesting post...) It about how I've been hammering my little arm off this weekend making hand forged hoop earrings.



I started making these back in college where I outfitted my entire group of friends with them. I made myself a tiny one that I still wear to this day and recently on a trip to NYC I had lunch with my friend Chris (from college) and she still wears hers too!

Basically its a loop of wire that I form then hammer to work harden it. Work hardening gives the hoop stability and pliability. Each earring gets hammered approximately 100 times and well, multiply that by 40 pairs and you've got yourself an arm that's pretty much toast for the next few days.



I offer these lovely earrings in sterling silver, 14k gold-filled and copper in various sizes and shapes so look for them when I relaunch the website at the end of the month. They are definitely a must have item!

making magnets

It's been awhile since I've done a large magnet blitz. I've been using such fine jewelry techniques lately that my hands have just about had it. So I needed to do something a little, say, "less tedious" on my digits.

So its off to glue up a whole mess of magnets today. Here they are in their glory...(or at least whilst they dry.)




I still have a whole line of rock n' roll graphics that I'm going to be featuring soon; guitars, drums, keyboards, bass guitars, headphones, turntables etc... They will be on sale here in Austin at Parts & Labour during the ACL festival weekend for sure.

Virtual insanity...

When you work for yourself sometimes you have to find different ways to keep entertained.

Motivation is not a problem for me, most days are pretty straight forward...wake up, hit the running trail, shower, breakfast, then sit at the workbench for say, about 10 hours, then find something else to eat...unwind a bit, plan for the next day. Repeat.

The challenge that I have with working for myself is the lack of human interaction on a daily basis. Sure, being able to wake up on some days and work in your pajamas might seem like a desirable thing, but not having people around to just simply chat with is excruciating. Talking to yourself just doesn't suffice. Trust me. So to lessen the pain of this solo-flight job that I have chosen for myself I have turned to listening to podcasts.



What's a podcast you might ask? Well, think of it as a pre-recorded talk radio program, without the commercials and usually with a lot more snark. (At least the ones I find interesting.) And they are free to download. There are thousands of them out there...just take a look on iTunes. From talking about music or politics to just recording a personal journal, you get to learn a lot about other people if you want. So I've turned to these podcasts as a sort of "virtual" water-cooler experience, except that its one-sided and unless I send an email or phone in a comment, they don't really know my side of things.



Oh well, I didn't say it was a perfect answer to my solo dilemma, it just helps to lessen the effect of it somewhat. I've met some really wonderful people who I have a lot in common with by listening to these podcasts. Well, not necessarily "met" in the face-to-face way of meeting per se, but met as in the virtual world where they read my emails and then respond.

That being said, recently I have had the fortunate opportunity to actually meet several of these podcasters in real life. Holly came to stay at my house on a recent vacation. Jennifer and I met for some Maker's Mark manhattans & girl talk near Columbus Circle. It felt like I knew them both for years. Which I did, just hadn't met them face to face before. It was a wonderful experience with others too, having lunch in the Village with Tim & Ron then meeting for coffee with Eric & Brett in Chelsea followed by happy hour & dinner in Hell's Kitchen. A blast!

I can't say that at any time I felt awkward or strange about being with any of them or they with me. There was an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation meeting each and every one. I guess it would sort of be like having a pen pal for years that you finally get to see in person. Just fast forward a few years where no one actually picks up a pen to write anything and you don't have to wait days or weeks for a letter.

I think its brilliant how technology enables a girl like me who begrudgingly sits alone all day with no co-workers to fill up that empty space with "virtual" co-workers who have now turned into true friends. It's truly amazing the type of people that you can meet online. ;)

how fun was this?

I think there comes a time in everyone's life where they just need to fess up to their desire of being a rock star. C'mon, let's face it, interactive games like Rock Band & Guitar Hero have made us all "believe" that we could really do it. Even the most shy, quiet or reserved people want it, I've seen it and its invigorating!

On my recent trip to NYC I had the opportunity to live out a little of this rock star fantasy with some friends. Let me just say that it does take a little coaxing to get me to perform, but that I truly love it when I'm up there. It's just a hell of a lot of fun...

So here I am (with back up singer in tow) singing "Do You Wanna Touch?" by Joan Jett. It was a blast and I think I'm still shaking...but it was well worth it.

rain & a little history...

Since I've been back from NYC its been pretty rainy here. I must say it's a great change of pace from the 100+ degree weather we've been having. Not to mention that we're in a drought so huge that it would take probably 40 days & 40 nights of straight rain to even put a dent into it. Anyways, its keeping me indoors and chained to my workbench.

Don't get me wrong, I love what I do so it doesn't really feel like work. There are the occasional times when I have to do some administrative stuff which is definitely my least favorite part of owning my own business. Some day I'll have "people" to do that for me, but until then I digress...

So a little history...I thought I'd share a little about how I got my start. When I first moved to Texas several years ago I was in San Antonio for a short time and got a job at the original Adelante Boutique in Alamo Heights.



At that time it was newly owned by Marla Mason Ross who had taken over the reins from her grandmother Mama Pat. Marla had a great eye for what the store would become and was the first one to purchase and sell my jewelry in her shop. She continues to bring fresh and innovative merchandise to her shop as well as pursues her own entrepreneurial spirit.

Well, fast forward to about a year later when I moved to Austin. I had met my now best friend Kristen who was working for the Adelante Boutique in Austin. She introduced me to Tricia Roberts (who is Mama Pat's daughter & also Marla's aunt) who had opened her own shop back in 1992.



I started selling my jewelry there immediately and think I even had a trunk show within the first few months of being in town. Tricia and I quickly realized that we shared a common interest in aesthetic & design. After many years of building our relationship we decided that we should collaborate on a private label line of jewelry for her shop. Which is where we are today. I've learned so much from her and look forward to continuing on this journey...

So there's a little peek into how I started & now maintain my business. To Marla, Kristen & Tricia I feel like I owe the world. It's such a pleasure knowing them all!

just back from NYC....

So it's been awhile since I've last posted anything here. Its not for lack of anything going on, quite the contrary. I've been quite busy indeed. So here's a quick rundown of what I've been working on:

1) Re-designing the website with LOTS of new merchandise. I found that I'm really being drawn back to my original style of making contemporary and mod jewelry with metal and semi-precious stones. The printed graphic work that I've been doing for the past few years has been completely satisfying, don't get me wrong, but tends to be a bit more limited in its execution. It will make its way back but in a completely new and fantastic form. Relaunch of the website is scheduled for late September with a party to celebrate it!



2) Doing more social networking and socializing in general. Getting out and about in Austin and letting people know that I exist has been really great so far and I've made some wonderful new friends & contacts in the process. 3) Preparing for New York. Its been 6 years since I've moved to Texas and while its been a wonderful experience (for the most part) I feel like I've done what I've needed to do here and am ready to move...home. I just spent the last 8 days in New York mixing a bit of work with pleasure and it just completely solidified what I have known all along. That I belong to New York. Every fiber of my being, who I am, what I stand for, my energy level, my design aesthetic, my motivation, my want to be a part of something big, everything points to being there. So I am preparing to go. Is anyone I know really surprised? Not at all.

And a nod to a new friend who made my trip so much fun. You've got a great sense of humor, great taste in music, know how to drink a proper pint, and have great taste in people. Cheers!

Red Carpet

So what do you wear for your first red carpet experience? Well, I decided to go vintage and try on a dress that I hadn't worn in about 7 years. Lo and behold, it fit! Its a Givenchy inspired "little black dress" that I accented with a black leather obi style belt. My purse was a vintage silver clutch which held the essentials; iPhone, lipstick, money & emergency granola bar in case I got hungry. :)

We weren't really sure who the press was stopping to interview. It seemed sort of random so I thought maybe they'd grab me, but I wasn't so lucky.

The Austin Fashion Awards show was great. There were so many people there it was electric! Alpha Rev started the show while people were getting seated. Jenny Hart was the charming emcee of the evening, making everyone feel welcome with a lovely sense of humor too. The Soldier Thread & Ume both played live during 4 different designers' fashion shows and The Octopus Project closed out the night.

We had a great time chatting and meeting people that I feel like I could do that every week! I am going to miss having so many social events to attend.

A big thanks to Matt Swinney of Launch 787 for putting together this whole beautiful week. He and his support team did an amazing job. And kudos to Austin for being so stylish!
